Trump advisers are currently weighing actions to dismantle the education department.

Officials are discussing issuing an executive order as part of efforts by Elon Musk to seize control of federal spending. This feels like a very bad thing.

For some unknown, Project 2025-related reason, the Trump administration is weighing executive actions to dismantle the US education department as part of efforts by Elon Musk’s so-called “Department of government efficiency” and their goal to to seize control of federal spending and slash the size of the government workforce.

Trump is set to issue an executive order that would shut down all functions of the education department that are not written explicitly into statute, or move certain functions to other departments. Trump’s pick for education secretary, former WWE wrestling executive Linda McMahon, is still waiting to be confirmed by the Senate. Sounds like her position could be eliminated before she even has her hearings.

Last Friday, lost in the chaos of Musk downloading federal employee data and Trump blaming a plane tragedy on DEI, dozens of education department employees were told that they had been put on leave immediately. At least 55 workers were told not to report to the office. Emails sent to the employees said they were being put on paid administrative leave because they attended a seminar on diversity, equity, and inclusion programs in the federal government, according to a labor union.

During his election campaign, Trump promised to eliminate the education department – which he described as being infiltrated by “radicals, zealots and Marxists”. I went to college and trust me - it's not. However it introduces you to people not in your immediate halo-group and that eventually leads to empathy a bigger worldview.

Only time will tell if it matters or not, but a US president alone cannot eliminate a department - Congress has to approve the creation or dissolving of an agency. Trump officials can ALSO alter key parts of the department’s budget and policies.

Workers for Doge, the unofficial government department with no congressionally approved mandate, led by Musk have also gained access to the US treasury’s highly sensitive database and federal payments system

A Doge team was working at the education department on Monday to implement Trump’s executive orders and agenda, an education department spokesperson confirmed.
