Once again, House Republicans stepped on a perfectly avoidable rake in their desperate bid to justify the impeachment inquiry into President Biden to the American people.
In their latest attempt at producing a “smoking gun,” the Republican chairman of the House Oversight Committee, James Comer, dropped a two minute video on X (formerly known as Twitter) declaring that the GOP has at last unearthed direct, corrupt payments between Hunter and Joe Biden which prove the Republicans’ longstanding claim that the elder Biden was involved in influence peddling.
According to Comer, newly-revealed bank records show Owasco PC, Hunter Biden’s law firm, issued three direct payments to Joe Biden for $1,380 each. In the past, Owasco PC had received payments from Chinese-linked and other foreign companies.
From this, Comer drops his so-called “bombshell,” insinuating that this means Joe Biden was the corrupt recipient of foreign funds.
Comer’s bombshell fizzled out almost immediately because of a few critical facts.
First, these payments were a matter of public record as far back as April 2022 thanks to information leaked by the conservative New York Post by way of a copy of Hunter Biden’s laptop harddrive.
Second, financial records show these transfers are loan repayments from Hunter to his father after Joe Biden helped his son finance a 2018 Ford Raptor truck when Hunter, a troubled drug addict, was cash-strapped.
Third, the payments were made in September, October, and November 2018 when Joe Biden was neither president nor Barack Obama’s vice-president.
Is it ridiculous for House Republicans to hinge their investigation on a series of transactions totaling approximately $4,000 in sum which were all legitimate loan repayments from son to father when the latter was a private citizen?
Of course, but Republicans would never let facts and reason stand in their way.
